Anatomy of Puppy Mill "Survivors"

The following contains some graphic photos of some dear little canine souls who were discarded as "useless" by some puppy mills. They were rescued by some kind people, and transferred into the care of the Humane Society of Waupaca County, to be rehabilitated, treated, spayed/neutered, and placed in loving homes.

While the photos may be upsetting to some, I felt that it was important to share their story, in the hopes that it would help educate the public to find other ways of obtaining animals (like adoption), instead of supporting the puppy trade and purchasing them from millers and pet stores. Buying from this industry only perpetuates the misery of the breeding animals, who are then condemned to repeat the process again and again, until they die, or are discarded like these dogs were. Only a few lucky ones end up someplace as nice as HSWC, where their needs will be taken care of, and they'll find good homes.

Meet Maxine and Struedel:

Maxine
Struedel

This is a closeup of one of the schnauzer's feet. Notice the hanging dreadlocks from never being brushed. The hair on the lower legs should be white, but it is stained from sitting in their own waste. Toenails are overgrown. I wish you could know how badly these dogs smelled when I got them.

This is a closeup of Struedel's face. The hair is all overgrown, there are globs of matter in front of her eyes. Her ears are dirty. In spite of her obvious neglect, she tries to give kisses!

And THIS is a closeup of the inside of her mouth. We estimate her age at only about 4, yet her teeth are more like that of an elderly dog. They are all encrusted with thick tartar, and some of them are loose. This photo was taken just before she went to the vet to be spayed and have her teeth cleaned.

Struedel goes to the Vet, where she receives an exam, a full dentistry, a rabies shot and is spayed. After a few days of recovery, she gets the finishing touches on her makeover, and is ready for adoption.

JUST LOOK AT THAT FACE! We all love her kisses now- her teeth are all clean, her beard is clean and unmatted, and there are no goobers in the corner of her eyes. She smells GOOD, perhaps for the first time in years.

This little girl is going to make some family very happy!

Meanwhile, back to Maxine:

Here she is, hiding behind Struedel. She's still very nervous about being touched by human hands, and won't eat in our presence. We put Struedel back in with her because that seemed to comfort her. It's going to be hard for her when Struedel is adopted, and she has to go it alone. She is terrified outdoors, and totally confounded by the leash. We have volunteers and staff spend time with her daily, in an attempt to convince her we're not so bad! Maxine may be with us for awhile, but that's OK- that's what we're here for!

For information on how to adopt these animals, please visit the Humane Society of Waupaca County's website.

PLEASE consider making a donation towards their care- because of the extensive dental work and rehabilitation that these dogs require, the cost of getting them ready for adoption is higher than usual, and the Adoption Fees don't even come close to covering it. Donations can be sent to: HSWC, PO Box 145, Waupaca, WI, 54981 and can be earmarked for the puppymill dogs.
